FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
"Scala is a centre of welcome for Cork youth and young adults which offers a unique and safe environment to develop skills in faith, justice, leadership and active citizenship. Valuing the gifts and contributions of all, Scala's ministry is rooted in a spirit of partnership between Redemptorists, lay people, young people and their families."
Who we are:
Scala Youth Ministry began in Cork in 1987 as partnership between Redemptorists and lay people. It was first established at the Good Shepherd Convent at Sunday’s Well. In 1998, Scala moved to Bessboro where its outreach expanded significantly.
Over the past 23 years the Redemptorists have drawn on resources and a wealth of experience nationally and internationally to become one of the most significant providers of youth ministry in Ireland. Through its retreat and reflection days, Scala helps over 3500 young people to focus on life issues, including peer pressure, healthy relationships, addiction, faith and justice, and community.
In addition, the Meitheal leadership programme operates in 19 schools, and each year 140 students are trained to be leaders and mentors in their schools. Since its introduction, nearly 2000 young people have completed this programme having used their skills to benefit tens of thousands of fellow pupils.
Scala’s ministry is youth-centered and seeks to promote an inclusive vision of church and society. It is subject to a stringent child safeguarding policy.
A new Centre:
In November 2009, Scala acquired Castlemahon House, Blackrock in order to develop its outreach to meet the needs of youth and young adults. Built in 1798, the building is structurally sound but will require significant renovation. In addition, planning permission has been obtained for the building of a new conference facility.
The proposed refurbishment and development will meet our requirements to provide space for a large conference hall, 4 seminar rooms, a youth cafe, administration and an international resident community.
In addition to Scala’s current ministries, Castlemahon House will accommodate the Redemptorist partner organisation SERVE, an overseas development and volunteering organization. Its mission is to raise awareness of justice and solidarity by offering local and international volunteering opportunities to young people.
Scala distinguishes itself from other providers of youth services. It does not simply deliver programmes, but remains in relationship and engaged with young people from early teens through adulthood. Scala will provide young people with a place of welcome and belonging that promotes an engaged faith for today’s complex world, training in moral and responsible leadership, and a centre for global education.
In summary, Scala services at Castlemahon House will provide:
- a resource centre for schools and community groups
- a locally based youth initiative
- an inclusive community promoting faith, life and justice
- a conference centre that will welcome groups with a wide variety of interests
The Need for Support:
The estimated cost of the purchase, renovation and development of Castlemahon House is €2.5 million. Through internal sources and restructuring, the Redemptorists will aim to commit €1.25m. The remaining costs will need to be met substantially through fundraising. In order to continue our work, the renovation and development of Castlemahon House must be completed by December 2010. If successful, Scala will have a modern and exciting facility to provide youth services for many years to come. We are optimistic that many people who have experienced and value our work will support this important project.
Help us to achieve our goal to resource youth and young adults by completing a Standing Order Form. Payments may be spread over two years. Alternatively, one-off donations may be sent by cheque made payable to THE SCALA BUILDING FUND.
